The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh

The Starry Night, painted in June 1889, is Van Gogh's most recognized masterpiece. Created from his asylum room at Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France, it depicts a night scene of a village under a turbulent sky. The painting features vibrant blues and yellows, with a crescent moon and stars rendered as radiating circles of light. The prominent cypress tree in the foreground, reaching skyward like a dark flame, connects earth to sky. Though the scene was painted from memory during daylight hours, it captures the dynamic energy of a nocturnal atmosphere. The church spire was likely inspired by churches from his native Netherlands rather than the local architecture. Van Gogh considered this work a failure and felt it was too abstract, yet it has become one of the most reproduced images in modern culture.

Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter whose work profoundly influenced 20th-century art. Vincent's bold colors, dramatic brushwork, and emotional intensity revolutionized artistic expression. His devoted brother Theo, an art dealer, supported him financially and emotionally throughout his life. Despite Theo's efforts, it is believed Vincent sold only one painting during his lifetime but created over 2,100 artworks, including 850 oil paintings, most in his last decade. Van Gogh struggled with mental illness throughout his life. While hospitalized in Saint-Rémy, he produced some of his most famous works. Tragically, Vincent took his life at age 37. Theo died just six months after Vincent, and they are buried side by side in Auvers-sur-Oise, France. Vincent achieved worldwide recognition only after his death.
