Spring by Lawrence Alma-Tadema

Spring (1894) is one of Alma-Tadema's most ambitious and celebrated works. The painting depicts a joyous procession celebrating the Roman festival of Cerealia, with flower-adorned young women descending marble steps against a Mediterranean backdrop. The scene captures over 170 figures in elaborate detail, showcasing Alma-Tadema's mastery of Classical architecture and costume. The composition is dominated by pink blossoms and white-clad maidens, creating a harmonious blend of architecture and nature. Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912) was a Dutch-born British painter known for his sumptuous depictions of Classical antiquity. His meticulous attention to archaeological detail and ability to render marble and metals earned him great success in Victorian England. After studying in Belgium, he moved to London where he became one of the most successful and highly paid artists of his time. His works influenced early Hollywood's vision of ancient Rome and Greece. Though his popularity declined after his death with the rise of modernism, recent decades have seen renewed appreciation for his technical virtuosity and historical imagination.
