I am half sick of shadows... by John William Waterhouse

"I am half sick of shadows," said The Lady of Shalott. (1915) is one of Waterhouse's most evocative depictions from Tennyson's poem "The Lady of Shalott." The painting captures the Lady weaving at her loom, surrounded by rich medieval tapestries in her tower chamber. The composition emphasizes her isolation and longing, as she gazes into a mirror that shows reflections of the outside world she is forbidden to view directly. The work showcases Waterhouse's mastery of Pre-Raphaelite techniques through its jewel-like colors, precise detail, and romantic medieval setting. The Lady's expression and pose perfectly convey the emotional weight of her curse-bound existence.
Medium: Oil on canvas • Movement: Pre-Raphaelite • Size: 39.9" x 29.9" (100.3cm x 73.7cm) • Location: Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto
John William Waterhouse (1849-1917) was a prominent British artist known for his paintings of literary and mythological subjects. Though working several decades after the original Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, he adopted many of their artistic principles and subjects. His work is characterized by rich colors, romantic themes, and strong female protagonists drawn from classical mythology and medieval poetry. Waterhouse's technical skill in oil painting and his ability to create atmospheric scenes made him one of the most successful late Pre-Raphaelite artists. His interpretations of literary themes continue to resonate with viewers today.
