Girl with a Pearl Earring (1665) is an oil painting by Dutch Golden Age painter Johannes Vermeer. Known by various names over the centuries, the painting gained its current title in the late 20th century due to the girl's earring. The work is a tronie, depicting a European girl in 'exotic dress' and an 'oriental turban' with a large pearl earring. A tronie is not a portrait but an idealized or generalized figure. In the Mauritshuis collection since 1902, it has inspired literary and cinematic treatments. This painting has become one of art history's most beloved and recognizable images.
