Bouquet of Sunflowers by Claude Monet
Bouquet of Sunflowers (1881) This vibrant still life captures the brilliant intensity of sunflowers in full bloom. Painted during Monet's time at Vétheuil, the work demonstrates his evolving technique and interest in exploring color and light through everyday subjects. Unlike Van Gogh's more famous sunflower series created years later, Monet's approach focuses on capturing the ephemeral quality of light as it plays across the golden-yellow petals. The loose, expressive brushwork creates a sense of movement, as if the flowers are still alive and responding to a gentle breeze. The painting exemplifies Impressionism's core principle of capturing fleeting moments and sensory impressions rather than detailed botanical accuracy.
Medium: Oil on canvas • Movement: Impressionism • Size: 39.4" x 32.1" (100cm x 81.5cm) • Location: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
Claude Monet (1840-1926) was a founder and defining figure of Impressionism, the revolutionary movement that transformed French painting in the late 19th century. Born in Paris and raised in Normandy, Monet developed a distinctive approach focused on capturing changing effects of light and atmosphere in the natural world. His early work "Impression, Sunrise" (1872) gave the movement its name. Throughout his long career, Monet painted en plein air (outdoors) and often created series of the same subject under different light conditions. His later years were devoted to his garden at Giverny, where he created his monumental water lily paintings. Monet's innovative techniques and vision profoundly influenced the development of modern art.
