American Gothic by Grant Wood

American Gothic (1930) is a painting by Grant Wood. It features a stern farmer and his daughter (often mistaken for his wife) standing before a Gothic-style house. The models were Wood's sister, Nan Wood Graham, and his dentist, Dr. Byron McKeeby. The painting is renowned for its depiction of rural American life and has been widely parodied in popular culture. Wood was inspired by a house in Eldon, Iowa, and aimed to portray "the kind of people [he] fancied should live in that house." The painting remains an iconic piece of American art.

Grant Wood (1891-1942) was an American painter born in Anamosa, Iowa. He was a leading figure in the Regionalist art movement, which focused on depicting rural American themes and landscapes. After studying in Europe, he developed a technique that combined American subject matter with elements of Northern Renaissance precision. Wood championed the portrayal of rural American life in a distinctive, stylized manner.
